Joda is a beautiful valley surrounded by rocky hills famous for the production of iron ore, manganese, and chromate. Since the land is rich with its mineral wealth, many factories have come up like TATA iron and steel company TATA sponge iron company, ESSEL MINES, and many other private companies. It is mostly populated by people from different parts of India."You shall be a crown of beauty in the hands of the Lord."
St. Teresa’s school was established due to the repeated request of the authorities of TATA iron and steel company of this area. Msgr. Jacob Vadakeveettil, the Prefect Apostolic of Balasore prefecture was kind enough to respond to their needs and with the help of the Carmelite sisters of Changanacherry, a school was opened in Joda on 1 March 1971 at Bonaikela club. On 30 April 1973, the foundation stone for the new building was laid. Thus, St Teresa's school began to have its own firm roots in the soil of Joda. Ever since the school was opened it began to function as a substation of Barbil. This station was opened to fulfill the spiritual needs of the employees of the iron and steel companies of this area. The Church was established here in 1979.
The convent as well as the school celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1996. Making use of the different opportunities we try our level best to give Jesus to the parents, teachers as well as students. To bring up the students of a remote area, we have started a hostel. At present, there are 30 borders. They experience a homely atmosphere in the hostel. The sisters take care of the overall development of the hostellers. 2021 will remain as a red-letter day in the history of Joda as they are celebrating the Jubilee of the School.
The sisters render active participation in the parish activities. We conduct catechism classes for students, prepare children for holy Communion, Confirmation, marriage preparation classes for the youth, etc. Other than church activities we do find time to visit families for prayer, Holy Mass, house blessing, Rosary etc.
